Design Notes
The fusion protein was designed to retain both the strong collagen-binding affinity of the CBD and the potent angiogenic activity of VEGF. Codon optimization was carried out for efficient expression in E. coli, and care was taken to ensure that neither domain interfered with the function of the other. This design allows for the precise targeting of VEGF to collagen-based scaffolds, enabling controlled and sustained angiogenesis in tissue repair.
Source
The CBD sequence is derived from matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which are enzymes involved in ECM remodeling, while VEGF is a well- known human growth factor.
